Leadership Election Update
31st August 2010 12:52 | by Andrew Tindall
There have been concerns over the pace and execution of the leadership election. In a bid to resolve this, The Executive has been in discussions with The Board. The Board have made proposals which the NEC have accepted.
Whilst the nominations period will continue to close on 3rd September as originally planned, voting will now not begin until the 11th September, concluding on the 25th. In this added period of time we hope to host leadership debates, and give members more of a chance to put questions to the candidates.
This change does have the side effect that we will briefly be without a Leader, and The Board and The NEC are looking into options with regard to meeting the requirements set out by the Electoral Commission.
The Executive have also asked The Board to appoint an independent election supervisor, who will look over proceedings.
In addition to this, Eric Priezkalns appears to have withdrawn his candidacy, leaving currently two candidates for Leader – the Campaigns Officer Peter Brett, and the 2010 election candidate Graeme Lambert.
01/09: Loz Kaye has declared his candidacy, prompting Graeme to withdraw. The current candidates are Peter Brett and Loz kaye.

Has responsibility for the election now passed from the NEC to the BoG?

With the EC, yes.

Since when was the EC capable of working that quickly to confirm an officer has resigned?

As a candidate and member of the BoG I would hope that you have recused yourself from taking part in the discussions regarding the election procedure and period.

So, as far as the EC needs to know, we have a leader until we vote a new one in.

I haven't had much input as I've been away on England camp for 4 days and got back late Sunday and slept most of yesterday. I have however offered my opinions at certain times and proposed different scenarios that we could look at. I do not have the deciding say, nor does anyone on the BoG. A majority must vote on something for it to be approved, whether I vote with or against has no bearing on that.
I did not vote either way on the proposals that the Board made to the NEC which were approved on Monday.

As an addition to these questions, who will be registered and/or acting as party leader in the event of a large "re-open nominations" vote?

Thank you for letting us know, Graeme. You'll hopefully understand that I felt I had to ask.

I LOLd.

If you want me to do this job for a bit I will do the following;
1. I will propose to the BOG that we should extend the nominations period until the 30th of September, with the voting to start on the 1st of October and continue for 14 days.
This is primarily because I want to give other members the chance to stand if they feel that they could offer better leadership than the current candidates after hearing a leadership debate.
Secondly, I do not feel it is right, in the interests of fair play, that one of our candidates is unavailable to the membership until after the nomination period has closed.
2. I will immediately appoint VJ as our Election Controller(or other title), to be ratified by members within 7 days.
3. I promise to respond to all other matters raised by members within 24 hours of recieving them. I cannot promise action on every matter as quickly as that, but you will have a response and can have confidence that I will be completely transparent about the reasons for any delay on matters that are urgent. Be warned, though, that if you raise any urgent matters with me I will expect you and the rest of the active membership to play a part in helping resolve problems. Inaction has become the acceptable norm for PPUK over the past year, it will not continue whilst I am a caretaker leader.
4. This is important, so listen in. As an interim leader I would not feel it is my place to make any policy changes or decisions. Any political decisions that need to be made will be delayed for the newly elected leader to act on. If we need to make any decisions urgently, I will ask our candidates, NEC members and the BoG to come to an agreement on how the party should act. Members will be consulted immediately on all such matters.
Anyway, that's about it. Peace, Out.
