We've been through a period of change here at Pirate Party UK, and I am pleased to say we have a great new team for the challenges ahead. In the National Executive Committee, Gavin Meredith has taken over as Treasurer, and congratulations to our new Campaigns Officer Andy Halsall. We also have a new web team leader in Ed Geraghty. I think we have the right people in place to help us take the party to the next level, I want to make sure that we make the most of the fresh ideas and new direction this change in personalities will give the party. It is an opportunity for progress that we must grasp with both hands.
We need to to advantage of this opportunity now. We may see the most onerous elements of theDigital Economy Act enacted in just a few short months. We will see vulnerable people being targeted by the entertainment giants. We must stand up for them.
Sarkozy and the eG8 have been putting global web governance on the agenda. If we don't act now to help shape the online world, the agenda will be set for years to come, and framed in a way that threatens the very founding principles of the Internet, the ideals we have come to expect and the freedom to which we are all entitled.
Action is the key.
There is a tendency to use a lot of our energy in discussion; but if we are to see the changes we know to be necessary we need to focus more energy on action as well as words. We need to be fielding good committed candidates, canvassing, running events, supporting campaigns online, designing material, appearing at talks and engaging with communities both on and offline.
Every member can play their part.
On the 12th of June we will have the first meeting of our newly constituted NEC. This will be the next step in ensuring the Party fulfills its full potential. It is time to have a party organisation whichfunctions efficiently. It is time to increase awareness of the Pirate Party. It is time to formulate our policy more clearly so that voters can see that we are credible, relevant to their lives and working to make a real difference.
I look forward to working with you all and seeing more members become actively involved in the ushering in of a new era for the members and the Party.
