Sidewinder, hope you make it.

As far as I know there's nothing piratey going on an brum uni. I imagine one could find a lot of pirate supporters in any university fairly easily though ;)

Hey guys, I'm Nathan, 18 years old. Studying video game design, or more specifically a "National Diploma in Games Development". ;P
I've had an interest in the Pirate Party ever since the Swedes kicked off theirs, and I've been coming to these forums and lurking for months. However, being from the area around Newcastle, there was no candidate for my constituency so I held back from registering.
However, since yesterday I've discovered a large amount of awareness and support for the Pirate Party within those on my college course. I've spoken to a dozen or so just today that stated they would definitely vote Pirate given the chance, so I figured I would sign up and represent the growing support here.

Hi, I'm Matthew. I'm 21 and studying Motorsport Engineering at Oxford Brookes.

I've believed in many pirate policies for years. A few areas really. I'm a fan of sharing and being open. I think the right to share things with friends and those you don't know is part of human nature and can actually bring peace in cases.

For a fair country we need sharing to continue. Passing a CD with some media to a friend to watch shouldn't be illegal. Sending a movie to a friend shouldn't be illegal. Controlling internet sharing erodes our civil liberties. Surveillance will be increased (from what they are now they are already at insane levels) and personal information will be shared to those who have no business with your data.

Sharing can benefit schools and even our NHS. We can develop ways so people are paid fairly and don't need massive amounts of cash from albums.
Willing to help out in any way I can!

We need a change! Online and Offline.

Ahoy pirates!

I am Martin, 30 years old and come from Augsburg, Germany.
I am also a member of the PP Germany.
I will likely move in 2-3 months UK (Poole, Dorset), and have registered with you ever. I hope the PPUK may need another fellow. Since I am a truck driver, I will unfortunately not have much time to contribute actively to me but I hope that we are but one or the other will see.

Make ready to change!

Hi, I'm Mike, a 20 y/o student of Computer Systems at Cardiff University.

I am drawn to PPUK because of its sympathies in policy to Free Software ("Open Source" if you like). Free software is subject to many copyrights which limit what kinds of product can be made, stifling creativity and progress in these fields. And yet, who would know if a large organisation were to use open source code and put it in their products? If said open source code were released under the GNU Public License, there would be no way of proving that said organisation were illegitimately profiting from it.

To this end, I would hope to contribute to policy on Free Software and open formats (see http://www.documentfreedom.org/).

Have a nice day!

Greetings all. I am 16 and I live in London. I was frustrated at how digitally (and otherwise) underdeveloped our country is in comparison with countries like Japan and Sweden so I decided to join the Pirate Party.

Also, person above me is a spambot. :P
We're the Pirate Party. Why? Because we arrrr!

Hi, I'm Malcolm, I am 23 and live in Aberdeen. I have become increasingly frustrated recently with the Digital Economy Act 2010 and the abuse of Police powers at the behest of private organisations such as F.A.C.T, and in particular the ongoing case against filesoup a site I have been using since its formation in August 2003.

Geeker has been treated in a despicable and immoral manner by the police, they have infringed on his human rights and even gone so far as to lie on official documents regarding his detention by the police and there refusal to allow him a phone call and by trying to make him sign documents without legal counsel present.
They have also turned over all equipment seized from his home over to F.A.C.T which is a private company that brought the case to the attention of police, so in otherwords the complainant is leading the Investigation...

Watching this travesty unfold has given me the incentive to sign up here and to try and play a active role in bringing change which is obviosly needed if shite like this can happen.

Hi there.
I'm David, I'm 18 and a student at Glasgow Caledonian Uni studying Audio Technology and Electronics.

Been getting more into politics as of late especially the DE act. My brother is already a member here and talks good things about the pirate party so decided to check it out for myself.

Hello, I'm 22 and live in Oxford. I'm not naturally a very political person, but I've always support the kind of ideals that this party stands for. However, as I've watched events unfold this decade in the area of privacy and copyright law and watched as our civil rights are gradually eroded for the profit of big business, I've been getting steadily more unsatisfied with the way this country is run, and steadily more determined that I want to help do something about it. The recent horrific news about ACTA, combined with how little anyone (on the Internet or otherwise) seems to care about it, is what pushed me over the edge and made me decide to join this party.

Hi PatternSpider! If you haven't already spotted it, can I draw your attention to the South East regional forum (Oxford is in the South East region) viewforum.php?f=31
It's always good to see someone who wants to get involved, and I would really welcome any and all assistance you can provide regionally. You can get hold of me through the SE forum, or direct at s.ogden@pirateparty.org.uk - I encourage you (and anyone else in the South East) to drop me a line telling me the ways in which you can help, or even blindly volunteering to do ANYTHING :D

Postby Frogfall » Tue Jan 18, 2011 7:52 pm

Hi,

I’m David and I’ve recently been wandering around these fora, and wondering whether or not I should nail my colours to the party mizzen-mast. My internal jury is still out on that one – as I’m still reviewing the evidence for & against.

However, as I also represented just over 1% of your vote in Oldham East & Saddleworth last Thursday (and am responsible for persuading at least one more percent to place an X in the Pirate box), I guess I’ve already demonstrated some sympathy towards the party’s causes.

Like many people, my awareness of the party was raised during the fiasco that was euphemistically described as the “parliamentary debate” on the Digital Economy Bill. I was disgusted, appalled, and greatly saddened to see how well-meaning politicians could be so easily swayed by a bunch of woolly and illogical notions about theft. Unfortunately there were a lot of groups who wanted the bill passed, for their own specific ends; people who would rather a whole bunch of bad laws be created, affecting the whole of society, than allow their own self interest to be hampered in any way.

But – I am also an example of someone who doesn’t use filesharing sites (or torrents) that carry copyright material. I am quite happy to pay for books and for music. As far as I’m concerned, they are the products of an industry - and, like any designed and manufactured item, nobody has an automatic moral right to obtain them for free. I suspect this may be a slightly heretical viewpoint around here – but if I’m flamed for holding it, then it would only prove that the party is definitely not for me.

Nevertheless, I’ve had an interest in IP law for some decades now, so do appreciate a lot of the problems and anomalies that they create. As an engineer I’ve had to learn a fair amount about the patent system (or systems – since they do vary across the world), and as an occasional writer I’ve also had to understand the vagaries of copyright.

However, the world is changing, and the rules we use to keep society fair and sane must change too. There are always vested interests in old systems, and there are always going to be people who try to manipulate any system changes to their own advantage – rather than for everyone’s benefit. If politicians get confused, and create bad laws – maybe we need a Pirate Party simply to help remind them that they are supposed to be representing society as a whole.

Hi Frogfall! Great introductory post. I am sure you aren't alone with your 'moderate' views ;)
We're a party full of all sorts of different views, some people focus more on copyrights than others, some focus more on patents. It is clear from our most recent manifesto that while some might want to abolish copyright all together (possibly me) the party itself takesa much more moderate view of reducing copyright terms.

Very happy to hear you voted for Loz in the OldE&Sad election. You've done something I haven't yet been able to do ... Vote Pirate! I hope that's just the start of the journey for you, and that you join the party, get stuck in, and help us become bigger and better.
