There are successful student groups in Huddersfield Uni (possibly on hiatus while the organiser is on a year abroad, not sure), and Dublin Uni (not UK, I know, still good source of inspiration)
What we should aim for is getting gtroups big enough so they are self-sustaining even once the organiser is no longer there. I'm sure this will happen, given time.
