Help with privacy required

There must be hundreds of thousands of people angry at having their rights encroached upon by the current government;

Government plans increased email and social network surveillance

Proposal echoes Labour scheme that was scrapped in 2009 over concerns it would breach civil liberties

Could somebody take the trouble to tell me, and many like me, how to surf and eMail with privacy in the face of these threats ?

On a serious note, this could be an idea for a blog post. Useful guide to protecting privacy online. Volunteers?

[EDIT] Just saw this post about an initiative of the Canadian Pirate Party, who face similar legislation, called Encrypt Everything. I'd check it out as a good place to start.

Thanks Finlay. Small beginnings. I've now deleted several old accounts and I'm browsing anonymously through TOR . Shame it doesn't work with Windows 2K. I'll have to upgrade my surfing machine.
Your blog post suggestion would be very useful, if implemented. There's no point being a pirate aboard a government snoopship.
