Targeted Posters

Postby laura_anne » Fri Mar 18, 2011 1:13 pm

I'm looking for ideas and input regarding campaigns posters that are specifically targeted at a particular group.
My example is different faculties/courses of universities and which posters could be put up around which buildings etc.

So for instance a censorship one in the journalism area or gene patents one in the bioscience area.

Does anyone have any ideas about which existing posters could be used in this way, or ideas for any new relevant posters we could create?

I'm not a graphic designer but would do my best to put some together myself if nobody else wants to volunteer :D

Journo's might like this, regarding censorship. It's an idea from PP-Australia that I pirated copied, it can of course be adapted: You could, for example, change the wee blurb bit underneath, especially after the elections.

Bioscience folk might like Drug Patents Kill People or DNA Patent posters.

Then you can always make something for CompSci (this would seem obvious), but the only poster I noticed that would appeal specifically to them would be this one, someone should make some more (someone that does CompSci, and understands the issues more than me :P )

Those are the easy/obvious ones I guess :)

A brief off the top of my head list of faculties:

Science (this one can be broken down further I reckon into genetics, pharmacology, psychology etc)
Medicine
Arts & Humanities
Education
Engineering
Business
Social Sciences

So any ideas about which of our policies/ideas could instantly grab someone interested in these areas (in poster form, so in not too much rambling detail obviously). It may seem like over-kill but I'd like to at least attempt to appeal to as many people as possible.

This extends further than students of course but hitting the unis is something I'd like to do ASAP for the SE2011 campaign.

Medicine: This might have already been mentioned regarding drug patents.

Science: "If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants". Prevention of derivative works goes against this.

Arts & Humanities: Quite a lot of classical art/literature was created before copyright. Why is it needed now?

Education: Sharing ideas is pretty much the basis of education. I think sharing of teaching resources is fairly common among teachers.

Business: This would need some looking into, I seem to recall reading somewhere that legal costs due to copyright laws are fairly significant, particularly among businesses. Also, I remember reading somewhere that Google said they wouldn't have been able to operate properly if they started in the UK due to copyright laws, regarding fair use I think.

The whole area of the Arts and Humanities is absolutely derivative works...no exceptions - there is no such thing as an original idea :)

Shakespeare may be a good example; iirc a lot of his works were derivative and would have been ... problematic to produce and publish had there been copyright - particularly modern copyright.

Star Wars is a perfect example of something huge that was made off of a collaboration of 1001 different prior-works.

I think it is a brilliant idea laura_anne. I'm not going to be useful and actually offer any help (sorry :(), but I will plaster the resulting posters all over the Uni I work at :D
