Copyleft/Free pirate related images for kids colouring book

Postby ajehals » Sun May 29, 2011 11:27 pm

This may be a bit of an odd one but...

Given that we are going to be running a stall at Peace in the Park in Sheffield on the 4th I figured it would be good to have a few things for people to 'do'/take etc.. So, tuoni has suggested we provide some people with a free DVD (Steal this Film), we also have leaflets and relevant posters etc.. and will see if we can sign up some new members. However, one thing that does seem to go down well is having stuff for kids to do (it's that kind of festival..).

So, I thought I'd print a load of plain pictures to colour in, preferably licensed for non-attributable reproduction (to keep it simple) and then as kids are colouring (Also buying a few boxes of crayons...) the whole 'you can't photocopy a colouring book, isn't that terrible' thing can come up. With a bit of luck it might also mean that we have a small PPUK logo visible of a few peoples fridges (via the universal medium of kids colouring in display..) for some period...

anyway. If anyone would be in a position to provide pirate themes images, preferably ones they had created themselves (and only ones of which we are sure the license is appropriate..) that would be wonderful... On an ongoing basis we could also make stuff like this available via the site..

Anyway, any comments of suggestions let me know. For me to get enough printed for it to be useful I would need any designs by COP Thursday.

Cheers.

might be worth trying a google image search on line drawing with a reuse licence, e.g. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=music& ... CCkQpwUoBA

Absolutely, of course what I would really like to see is something that we don't have to attribute or otherwise mark with a license, other than 'you are free to copy this', something as simple as possible... But if it comes to it I'll either draw something myself (I have kids, I have a tablet, I have to do this regularly anyway, just not pirate related.. :) ) or do it this way..

Make sure one of them includes the PPUK logo or the PPI signet :D

I believe the PPI signet is released under the (P) 2009 Pirate License - "Do What You Want Because A Pirate Is Free License"

Maybe some of the images to colour in could be pirates, pirate ships, treasure chests, etc. (there was some discussion about something similar in another thread recently I believe).

A non-picture idea would be to have some large sheets of paper and instructions on how to fold it into a hat or boat, and then colour that in.

You could even have a "design your own pirate flag" option.

How are you meant to make something politically serious for kids to colour in?

End of the day, a kid is much more likely to want colour in this - and by proxy, a parent wanting it on their fridge...with the logo in the corner;

This isn't about political grand-standing, it's about exposure, and if we can be seen as not taking ourselves so seriously 100% of the time, then maybe we can actually live up to the "we're a new type of party" image we've been trying to cultivate.

Does it matter?

This is not the sort of thing we should be associating ourselves with. It's hard enough on the door step persuading people we aren't Somalians or about to commandeer a ship without this.

We should always take ourselves seriously because if we don't, voters won't. This being for kids is irrelevant.

how?

>>Copyleft/Free pirate related images for kids colouring book
>>for kids colouring book
>>for kids

This being for kids is the exact point - we have a great USP for kids, not exploiting that is crazy - and I'm sure that anyone with even half a brain cell can see that that is the point.

It's the image of the Pirate Party that I want us to be careful of.

We should not be associating ourselves with the stereotype because we will simply not be taken seriously. We have to take ourselves seriously in order to be taken seriously by the voters.

Putting our banner on a Black Beard drawing does not give off the serious political party image that I, and others, have been trying to portray on the doorstep.

As Loz said, it's time to stop playing politics and BE a political party.

Completely agreed, and I would not support the association outside of this very limited context.

It is an item focused at kids, on one stall, for one day, at a fairly small festival in Sheffield - not some massive national campaign with Loz commandeering a Boat, and sailing it up the Thames (although, that would be awesome :P)

Let's try something a bit new, and a bit different, and if it doesn't go down very well, or is largely ignored, then meh - fuck it. If it works, and there is some uptake, and a bunch of people that weren't aware of us now at least know, and have a little story to tell about some picture on their fridge that little jimmy drew - then awesome.

It's different, a bit light-hearted and will have very limited scope, exposure, and potential for damage - and we go on about being different so much that we really need to start acting on it.

People are sick of the same-shit-different-arsehole of all political parties - so yes, whilst we need to stop playing politics and actually do it, let's do it our way, instead of the way that everyone hates.

The worst that happens is that nothing happens. So we are exactly where we are now.

I'd say that there's a good sight more than three pirates around here who think this is not just a good idea but a great idea, and it certainly doesn't come anywhere near activating the "don't be a goofball" clause. So I say do it.

People already class us as a joke party. If we think we will get any credible exposure by doing this then we are wrong. We may as well wear pirate hats and eye patches on the door step if we are going to play into the stereotype.

We are not a joke party, and this is the kind of thing a joke party would do.

How can you not see the giant gaping chasm between this ^^^^, and some light-hearted pictures for a 2 year old to colour in?

Because we shouldn't be associating ourselves with the stereotype at all.

There's plenty of evidence to suggest that our biggest problem is people not having heard of us, not that "people... class us as a joke party." This completely harmless idea will help improve awareness of the party. At the moment, any publicity that's not overwhelmingly negative is good publicity, IMHO.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a good idea and you're being unnecessarily "concerned of Milton Keynes" about it. :-P

Short of changing the name, we will always be associated with the stereotype regardless of if we like it or not - we might as well use it to our advantage in the few areas that we can.
