Spam on the wiki

Postby cabalamat » Wed Dec 28, 2011 4:44 am

Have look at http://www.pirateparty.org.uk/wiki/Spec ... entChanges

Most activity is spammers creating pages and then adding spam to them. This is obviously not desirable; there's some instructions on setting up MediaWiki to combat spam at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam

We're investigating current spam attacks on the wiki.

I'm on the case, a minor change was made yesterday which should reduce it. We are continuing to monitor the situation.

I deleted over 200 spam pages on the wiki this morning, and blocked the accounts that created them. Sadly, I've seen some more spam appear (and another suspicious looking account that will probably spam soon :( )

yeah I've noticed that some are still sneaking through, the main worry is they are passing the captcha for signup which suggests these are real people solving them, I'm looking at upgrading the wiki to the latest version at which point I've found an alternative which we should be able to customise to our own use which should also work with screen readers.

Are we using a 'standard' CAPTCHA or reCAPTCHA? I've found the latter to be extremely efficient at cutting out spam

We will be using a more complex/fun system involving answering some questions. Nothing scary. Steve is currently in the process of making this so. (and reCAPTCHA has been horribly broken for quite some time)

hmmk...

That's odd though, given I've not had much issue with using reCAPTCHA

The ConfirmEdit extension page states "Unfortunately, as of 2011, some spammers appear to have figured out a way to bypass it, either through character recognition or by using humans. For that reason, it is not necessarily recommended." in the recaptcha section.

We've implemented QuestyCaptcha with questions that should be easy enough for most people and waste the time of spammers if they're desperate to spam.

With the exception of one question all the answers are on the wiki main page.
