Hello to all,
I thought I'd post first in the Flamepit and work myself out through good behaviour, but that doesn't seem possible. Posting there, I mean.
I've just joined today as a result of the double-page Observer article which states therein that the Pirate Party is a tad short on pensioners. You now have one extra and I'm looking forward to the meeting of minds.
I'm a guitar-player/painter who abandoned the representative democracy farce some time ago. The prospect of a forthcoming eDemocracy has maintained my interest and today's Observer discovery has reminded me of the need for activity. So, good luck and a fair wind. See you around.

Edit. I'm in the Boston area. Guitar Rig 5/Omnisphere/Jamstix 3.3.......and lots of freeware.
Lend me your ears.

Hi,

I am over 30 years old, work in IT (sysadmin and webdev) but have a background in design.

I am concerned that these new communication tools we've created will be taken away from us. Indeed I discovered the Internet I thought it would be the infrastructure/technology that would bring us humans closer together, allow us to share more knowledge and culture and hence progress. I sense this is not in the Interest of some and they will be relentless, so should we.

Hi, i'm Seán and i'm an 18 year old student from Swindon. I'm attempting to go to Uni next year. :) This kind of feels a bit like an AA meeting; the way we are all introducing ourselves. :D

Hi, I'm Ian and I'm a games programmer living in the Midlands.

I decided to become a member because I noticed the party is pretty much aligned with my core beliefs. I'm on a bit of a copyright/patent reform rampage at the moment so I thought now would be a good time to sign up.

Hi Ian. Out of interest, do you work for a particular company or are you an indie developer?

I work for a large games studio owned by a major publisher, although I'm also doing some indie stuff on the side (not announced anything yet though). I won't post who I work for here but you are more than welcome to google my nick which pretty much tells you anyway!

Ah. Ok. Your dev creds certainly check out! :D

Not my sort of games mind, but the company's reputable enough (I'll reserve my comments on the publisher though) :P.

Haha, well, yeah... There's a lot to be said about most publishers, but they pay my wages and treat me well so I'm happy with the arrangement for the moment. To be honest the games we make are not really my 'thing' either, but that doesn't matter to me really. I work on the tech/engine side of things so as long as I keep getting interesting problems to solve I'm happy.

Hah! Fair point. That's a depressingly typical dev attitude though, I must say. I always think it's important to have some kind of interest in the thing you're working on as it gives you an added vested interest in doing a good job. That being said though, this comes from a QA Tester, and it's all too easy to lose interest in making sure the finer points work exactly as they should if you have little interest in the product itself.

One of the issues I take with your publishers (other than them destroying the PC Gaming experience pretty much single-handedly with one franchise [ok, I might be giving the game away a bit here]) is that they shafted a game developer that one of my colleagues previously worked for fairly recently after only one release. They have utterly stupid business practices, but that's what happens when the CEO (or whatever he calls himself) doesn't care about games at all an only about the money (ok I'm really giving the game away here).

Oh absolutely, but just because you don't necessarily wish to play the game yourself doesn't mean you can't feel passionately about it though. For me its more about watching friends and family enjoying the game than enjoying the game myself. That provides me with a better sense of achievement because I know I've made somebody elses life just a little bit better - even if only for a few hours.

Oh man, you should have heard the internal discussions after some of the studio cuts - we even met the same fate, but by sheer perseverance we managed to escape consultation with most of our team still intact. I absolutely do not condone the way the publisher behaves at times. They absolutely only care about their share price and their shareholders. They don't care about their teams (unless it affects their stock price) and they definitely don't care about gamers. But luckily, the best way to get good performance out of teams and therefore create great selling games is to treat them well. You just have to worry when they don't think they need you any more.

Good response. It's nice to see there are some devs that think like that. Many devs, including a few I work with, are much more challenge-motivated and like solving difficult problems through code. I find that practice somewhat destructive though as it tends to cause all sorts of problems down the line. And that's just with my short-lived experience in the industry thus far

Hell yes, that's a respectable collection. I shudder when I see how much my Steam account is worth

I'm glad to hear you made it! Fortunately for my colleague they pretty much saw it coming, so they did a good job of stitching the publisher reps up in the process.

Hi, my name's Jack and I'm an almost-20 and unemployed. I was doing my A2s in college until Christmas when I had to leave because I couldn't live on 0 income anymore and couldn't find a part-time job. I joined the Pirate Party because I wanted to belong to a party that actually fits the modern times we live in and bows down to the people and not the money.

I'm sure I'll enjoy it here and I hope you guys don't mind me hanging here.

Well hello there, I am new to the forum though have been lurking around for quite a bit already.

I am quite half hearted with the government, honestly. For starters, I think that they are doing a great job with it. Or at least that is how they appear to be doing with it. But I am not quite moved with how they show bias to big corporations, though nothing of hard evidence to support this claim. But I think that is how most people would see it fit.
