Petition against filesharers having net access cut off

Postby cabalamat » Wed Aug 26, 2009 1:33 am

So. Today the government have announced that they are going to cut off the internet access of filesharers.

We're obviously going to campaign against this. (I'm surprised the govmt are doing this, but it plays right into our hands and we should make the most of it). Part of our campaign, IMO should be a petition on the Number 10 website. We can't do this right now because the PM's on holiday, but we'll be able to set it up on September 7th.

When it's set up, we'll get all our members and facebook supporters to sign it. That'll bring in a few thousand signers immediately. We'll also publicise it on our blog (will probably get some press attention) and ask our supporters to publicise it online and to their friends.

The ideal will be for it to become the biggest petition on number10 (the current biggest has c.70,000 signatures; the biggest ever had 1.8 million).

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? What should the wording be?

Really good idea, I'd say we should keep it as short and simply worded as possible so people know what they are signing without having to read a solid block of text.

Something catchy, and under 5 or 6 words.

Sharing is Caring seems obvious

possibly consider what happens when squeezing the words together too

ie SHARINGISCARING or MANDYSDEATHSTAR or INTERNETREFORMPROTEST

i'm imagining we would need a website to promote this.

I was thinking of a page or pages on the wiki.

Here's a start on wording:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to not cut off anyone's internet access for filesharing.

Under "More details from petition creator":

Gordon Brown has said internet access is an essential public service like electricity or gas. We wouldn't cut off someone's electricity if they shoplift a CD, so we shouldn't cut off their internet for illegal filesharing.

Where a household contains more than one person, cutting off net access is collective punishment. Collective punishment is a breach of civil liberties, and if done in wartime is a war crime; so we shouldn't do it to the british people in peacetime.

Instead of putting the petition on the No.10 website, why not just host a petition here? The benefit would be that, if it gathers steam, then it would draw more and more people to this site. It would be the only petition here, but it might get lost on the No.10 website in the noise of all the other petitions. Best of all, if we do it right, we could turn it into a media stunt, as we could 'present' the petition.

Here's Parliament's rules on petitions: http://www.parliament.uk/parliamentary_publications_and_archives/publicpetitions.cfm

I don't think an online petition is acceptable to Parliament, but that is not that relevant. If anything, if we get very many people to sign our petition, it will show how out of touch Parliament is.

If done correctly this could give us a massive boost in media coverage & credibility. This method also means that we can collect both onine and offline signatures when we are out and about campaigning.

Great idea. When it's ready we should encourage people to retweet and put it in facebook status's to help it spread. A facebook group for it might help too. God knows how many "1 million against blah de blah" group invites i've got in the past

Maybe not all viral techniques. Certain people might complain  but as many as we can :)
