The NEC

What is the NEC?

The National Executive Committee (NEC) is the executive body of the Pirate Party UK. They handle the general administration of the party, including any legal requirements.

The NEC consists of the Elected Officers – Party Leader, Nominating Officer, Campaigns Manager, Treasurer and Party Secretary. These officers may also appoint members to serve as their deputies and work alongside them.

Elections for the NEC must occur no less frequently than every 2 years. The next elections must be held by January 2012.

The NEC has meetings on a weekly basis, where decisions are made by simple majority. In the event of a tie, the Party Leader has the casting vote. Appointed Officers do not have a vote, but may express their views and these may be taken into consideration by the NEC.

Minutes from NEC meetings are made available on the wiki on a regular basis.

Individual Responsibilities

Each NEC member handles specific duties with regards to the administration of the party.  Elected Officers may delegate some of these duties to Appointed Officers.

The Party Leader is responsible for the party overall, and also acts as the public face, representing the party in interviews.

The Nominating Officer works with RAOs to appoint our election candidates.

The Campaigns Office is responsible for our campaigning and communications to members such as newsletters, and the Campaigns officer has legal responsibility for election campaign expenditure.

The Treasury is legally responsible for party finances, and handles membership and donations.

The Party Secretary (formerly Data Controller) is responsible for handling stored data and making sure we comply with Data Protection laws, and essentially acts as party secretary.
