Pirate Party Celebrates Election Result
The Pirate Party UK has been relatively successful in contesting its first election since being founded 10 months ago. The nine Pirate candidates achieved up to a 0.6% share of the vote in their respective constituencies. Tim Dobson, campaigning in Manchester Gorton, had the best result, receiving 236 votes. If the party were able to stand in every constituency, the result would have scaled up to nearly 100,000 votes for the Pirate Party. Under proportional representation, the party would have two members of parliament - significant when considering European elections, which the Party intends to stand in.
This election campaign has taught us invaluable lessons and the Party believes that every volunteer - or the entire party membership, the NEC, and all our PPCs if you prefer - can feel very proud of the work they have accomplished. Today was always going to be the start - rather than the end - of the battle, and we now must retire, re-group and revise our campaigns, forge alliances, and act on lessons learned if we wish to accomplish even a tenth of what we are capable of.
The Pirate Party UK has established a firm foundation on which to expand. We have accomplished our main goal of increasing public awareness of the party, and have gained vital experience in running an election campaign, we can look towards the future, and establish ourselves as a party that is here to stay.
The Party has come a long way since its foundation following the June 2009 EU Elections, and it is remarkable to think that after just a few months, we have taken part in our first General Election. We could not have done this without the support of our members, many of whom took an active role in our candidates' campaigns.
