Theresa May Approves Richard O'dwyer Extradition
Richard to appeal in bid for Justice
Loz Kaye – Pirate Party UK Leader:
The Home Secretary has approved the extradition of a Sheffield student to the US. Richard O'Dwyer is accused of running a website that allowed third parties to post links to videos on other websites. Despite the website being operated from and based in Europe, US authorities are seeking his extradition. I am disappointed, but not surprised that Theresa May has come to this decision, despite no evidence being presented that Richard has committed a crime anywhere.
I hope that during the upcoming appeal, the Court will have an opportunity to examine the legal status of linking, a fundamental element of the World Wide Web, and confirm that sites such as the TVShack do not break the law. UK individuals and businesses should not be worried about being extradited to foreign countries for innovating, especially when their actions are not illegal in the UK. The correct decision will mean that the judiciary and Home Secretary can use their time to deal with serious criminals and Richard can remain in the UK and get on with his life without harassment or fear.
