Maria Aretoulaki recieved more than double the votes of her UKIP rival

The Pirate Party UK stood three candidates in Manchester on Thursday, Tim Dobson in Ancoats and Clayton, Maria Aretoulaki in City Centre and Loz Kaye in Bradford ward. Our candidates and activists have been working hard to make contact with those in their wards with a positive result for the Pirate Party and for the people in the wards where they stood.

Loz Kaye beat the Lib Dems to 4th place in Bradford ward, picking up 5% of the vote - the best result the UK Pirate Party has had in any election in the UK. In the City Centre Ward Maria Aretoulaki recieved more than double the votes of her UKIP rival, obtaining 3% of the vote. This was the first time the Pirate Party has stood candidates in local elections in the Centre of Manchester.

We want to do more. It’s clear that we will have to work hard to gain the trust of voters around the UK, but we have made a start. One of the major concerns that the Party had in Manchester was the low turnout in previous elections. Maria described it as “shocking” in her speech at the count and during the campaign. As a party that strives to increase democratic participation, we are sorry that we didn’t manage to boost the number of people voting in the way we had aimed to to this time. It is going to be a long haul getting the public to trust politics and politicians again. But we can not afford to give up.

We’ll be out in Manchester again next week, and every week from here on out. There are still too many parts of the city that feel left out. This is just the start. We would like to thank all the people that got in touch with us and our candidates, our supporters and activists who worked on these elections and especially those people who put their trust in us and chose to vote Pirate.
