NEC meeting minutes 15th March 2010

Attendees

Andrew Robinson, John Barron, Peter Brett, Philip Hunt, Miah Gregory

Summary

Start of NEC meeting

Minutes of previous meeting approved.

Election date. The BBC have a timetable to the election. It's pretty likely that it will be the 6th of May. A budget is expected on the 24th March 2010, and the BBC are expecting Gordon Brown to announce the election date: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8496591.stm

Results of internal voting/elections are now in.

Miah re-elected as Data Controller.

Andrew Robinson and Graham Lambert ratified as candidates.

Copyright duration proposals were the only really contended proposal. 90 votes in favour of current position, with the other two options getting 100 votes split fairly evenly between them.

Andy has read through all the comments in the text boxes. Pleasingly, most of these were either complimentary or explaining choices. Andy is putting together a summary of the comments and will write a blog post on this subject.

Manifesto release and scheduling.

Concern that releasing everything at once will result in something being overshadowed/ignored.

Plan is to release PPC results tomorrow.

Manifesto will be released once it has been written up.

From a press point of view, we don't want stuff going out in dribs and drabs - controlling this allows us to maximise impact/coverage.

Andy and Graham are at an event in Manchester on Tuesday, at which we will announce their ratification. Embargoed release on this topic to prep journalists.

Press list needs to be pulled together.

Plan to use manifesto templates created by Andrew Tindall.

Peter Brett, Philip Hunt, Andrew Robinson and Will Tovey will make up the manifesto writing team.

The deadline for getting the manifesto written is Wednesday lunchtime. It should be sign-off by this point and sent to press by 6pm.

Events coming up in Manchester. Andy is at the launch of the students for free culture event in Manchester on Thursday, Graham will be there. University students will be helping to run the event.

Andy is taking part in the Counter 2010 conference, Tuesday/Wednesday next week. Andy is speaking in the final windup panel at this. Andy believes that Amelia may be coming over too. Lots of good press opportunities here.

Open Rights Group demonstration coming up on the 24th March. Clashes with the Counter 2010 Conference. Andy will send Peter Brett the leaflets and banner he has, for the members that attend to use/give out. Peter Brett is pushing this forward.

We need to know who our candidates are going to be before the end of March. This means we need to start the next and final round of ratification votes on Monday 22nd March. Looking at around 5 candidates, from a financial point of view.

Potentially two more candidates in London, one in Glasgow, two in East Midlands (Derby and Leicester).

Action: John will encourage the potential candidates to post a bio in the relevant regional forums.

Local candidates need to put themselves forward as soon as possible, deadline 29th March.

Usage of PPUK blog. We need to make sure there is a steady, regular stream of quality posts, as this is an important media stream. Peter Brett will co-ordinate the scheduling and proof reading. Exec members should provide content to him for this.

Action: Peter Brett will talk to Tom about the technical side of managing this.

Election agents and campaign management structure. Election agents are critical for a successful campaign, but are likely to be difficult to find within the party. Candidates need to understand that although the central party administration will support them, they will generally need to be proactive.

Merchandising. Andy will push forward with the interim solution. Can also use this store to sell other items, for a 20% cut.

Printing run of A4 folded to A5 for free delivery to a constituency is going to be £800 for 30000 copies.

We need A2 or A3 sized posters too.

Deputy treasurer. Diarmuid Clarke has read the electoral commission details and is happy to take on this role.

End of NEC meeting.
