NEC Meeting Minutes 7th December 2010
Attendees
Andrew Tindall, Loz Kaye, Peter Brett, Finlay Archibald, John Barron, Miah Gregory
Apologies
Peter Liddell
Approve minutes of last meeting.
The minutes of the previous NEC meeting were approved and have been published.
Matters arising
Libel reform
John Barron reported that it was very good. He met some people and made them aware that PPUK care about this as well as everything else we do.
Nominations for Scotland 2011 candidates
Peter Brett asked whether nominations for Scotland 2011 candidates have been opened.
Finlay Archibald reported back that they had not yet been opened, as far as he knows.
Finlay Archibald asked whether John Barron could open nominations in the next couple of days.
John Barron answered that as soon as information is provided to him about how the nominations process should operate, he can get things rolling within a day or two.
Finlay Archibald suggests a blog post and email to Scottish members encouraging them to start threads should they wish to be considered.
Finlay Archibald emailed the officers list with some suggestions for taking the Scottish campaign forward. Those present agreed that this was an appropriate way forward.
Replacement virtual machine
Miah Gregory reported that to the best of his knowledge the replacement virtual machine had not been purchased.
Web team meeting
Miah Gregory had not heard anything on this front as of yesterday, so he emailed Tom Lilley regarding setting something up.
As it happened, the website was down as the NEC meeting started, and this prompted a short discussion on web team priorities. It was felt that sorting out a functioning web team was more important than replacing the virtual machine.
Upcoming Elections
A decision was reached earlier in the meeting regarding nominations for Scotland.
Finlay Archibald has been putting some details together for a draft budget for the Scottish campaign, along with other Scottish pirates. To fund this, he suggests that we need to start another donations campaign similar to the 2010 general election.
Peter Brett asked when tickets for the conference were likely to go on sale.
Finlay Archibald replied that they could go on sale whenever, as the assumption was that they would be sold via the website.
Some concerns were noted with respect to the website stability, how payments would be received and whether another bank account was required.
Peter Liddell was not available for comment.
Eventbrite was suggested as an alternative way to handle this.
John Barron suggested that some kind of “register interest as an intending participant” notice could be put up immediately. Finlay Archibald agreed to write up some content to add to the blog post he is writing.
In related news, Finlay Archibald has had an email from a Scottish member with experience in running events who has offered his services.
Election broadcast
Finlay Archibald is half way through writing a forum thread on this topic which he hopes to finish off by the end of the NEC meeting. He has been in touch with a German pirate regarding this, and the film + media club at Strathclyde University has expressed willingness to help in making a film.
Oldham and Saddleworth
It is now known that there will be a by-election, and that it cannot be prior to New Year. It was suggested that we should look for candidates now, and begin the process of fund-raising/building a campaign team to contest this election.
Finlay Archibald re-iterated the benefits of spending money on re-usable banners/flags/etc so they can be used in Scotland.
Wikileaks
Lots has happened over the last day or two. Mirrors are being set up by various Pirate Parties across Europe.
Loz Kaye did a BBC World Service interview on Sunday: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00c5x0g/The_World_Today_06_12_2010/ 31 minutes in, approximately.
Any other business
Moving away from Paypal
A discussion about the options for moving away from Paypal took place, but this needed Peter Liddell’s input. Finlay Archibald agreed to bring this up with Peter Lilley when he sees him next.
John Barron reviewed the actions he has agreed to
- Opening of nominations for Oldham and Saddleworth
- Opening of nominations for Scottish list candidates
John Barron proposed to email interested parties/those not present at this meeting tomorrow evening, and will write a blog post announcing the opening of nominations which will run from Thursday 9th December to Friday 31st December.
Scottish election discussion
Finlay Archibald noted that there is a Scottish election discussion ongoing on IRC/pirate pad, and invited any interested parties to take part.
Closing comments
Loz Kaye noted that Wikileaks has allowed the party to be seen in a much wider light than just music filesharing, and that we are now at the heart of civil liberties debate.
