Dear member,

It’s time for everyone’s favourite fortnightly round-up of pirate news.

  1. Leadership Election

This week the two candidates – Peter Brett, and Loz Kaye – took part in a live video debate, giving members a chance to find out more about each of the candidates and what they believe they can bring to the party. We’re working on getting this uploaded; so if you missed it, keep checking the site for a link.

Following previously announced changes to the schedule, voting for the new party leader should begin tomorrow, and will conclude on the 25th. You will be contact once voting has opened.

  1. Yorkshire & Humberside RAO Election

Tomorrow voting should begin for members in the Yorkshire & Humberside region to elect their Regional Administrative Officer. The single candidate is Vivan Jayant. You can read his nomination topic here: http://www.pirateparty.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=2568

  1. Election Monitor
“With Nominations now closed, and the leader's debate enjoyed by many, the Board would like to announce the appointment of VJ as election monitor for the upcoming leadership election.

We extend our thanks to VJ for volunteering to undertake this role and charge him with the important task of ensuring that the upcoming elections are transparent and fair.” – Statement from the Board

  1. Membership Renewals

Members must renew their membership annually if they wish to remain with the party. Membership now costs £1/month, and can be paid monthly, quarterly, or yearly. There is a discount rate of £3/year available to students, the unemployed, and the retired.

If you want to vote in the leadership election and you joined around this time last year, it is important to make sure you have renewed, otherwise you may be unable to vote. You can renew by going here: https://www.pirateparty.org.uk/party/membership/renew/

  1. Edinburgh Liberton/Gilmerton By-Election

The results are in for the first local election in which we stood a candidate. Philip Hunt achieved 0.6% of the vote – the same as the highest share we achieved at the General Election. This suggests that we are at the very least maintaining our current level of support.

Thanks to Philip’s hard work we now have a benchmark for future local elections, and can look to see what we can do to improve the result next time.

  1. Volunteers Needed!

We still need volunteers for the following:

- Freshers Freshers Week is fast approaching. The party needs volunteers to help distribute flyers and talk to university students. If you would be interested in helping, contact f.archibald@pirateparty.org.uk

- Regional Administrative Officers for North West England, East Midlands, East of England, N. Ireland, and Wales.

If you would be interested in filling any of these vacancies, please express this on the relevant regional sub-forum, or contact j.barron@pirateparty.org.uk

- Press Officers You don’t have to be an expert to work for the press team. You just need to be reliable, and able to read through and deal with e-mails and requests promptly. You should also be keeping an eye on the news for stories as they happen, and working with the team to get well written releases sent out within hours of the news breaking. If you would be interested in working with the Press Team, contact press@pirateparty.org.uk

- Candidates We wish to stand candidates in as many elections as possible, but to do that, we need members to come forward.

If you would be interested in standing in the 2011 Scottish Parliament Elections, please contact the Regional Administrative Officer for Scotland at a.paliwoda@pirateparty.org.uk

Before then, there are also numerous local council by-elections. You can find a list of known elections here: http://britainvotes.blogspot.com/

If you would be interested in running in one of these by-elections please contact your Regional Administrative Officer. (If you don’t know who that is, see http://www.pirateparty.org.uk/party/people/administrative/#rao /)

We are also looking at running in the London Assembly, as well as the 2012 Mayoral Election. For details see http://www.pirateparty.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2109
