  • Reduction in the length of copyright to 10 years
  • Exemption for Format shifting
  • Exemption for educational purposes
  • Mandatory DRM labelling
  • End to perpetual rights extensions by shifting to new formats or making small changes
  • New right for disabled people to demand an unrestricted version of DRM protected content where that is necessary to allow them to access it.

  • Prohibiting patents on software, genetics, business methods, and concepts
  • Compulsory patent licensing scheme
  • Exemption for non-commercial and academic purposes

[edit] Internet

  • ISPs should be classed as "mere conduits" and not be liable for traffic over their network that they did not initiate, receive or save
  • Network Neutrality: ISPs must provide best quality of service irrespective of the source or destination of data sent via their network
  • The government must not censor the internet
  •  ??? Censorship and content blocking performed by ISPs should be explicitly opt-in
  • Customers should only pay for the connection speeds they receive
  • The Universal Service Obligation should be extended to include broadband internet access

  • The BBC should be prohibited from using any DRM technology
  • The list of national sporting events that cannot be exclusively broadcast on pay TV should be maintained and expanded

  • Third parties should be forbidden from intercepting or monitoring any communications, except where authorised by the courts
  • Compensation should be available for those affected by loss of personal data by government and companies
  • Full review of RIPA including new criminal liability for abusing powers
  • New public database maintained by the Information Commissioner containing details of CCTV cameras and their data controllers
  • New restrictions on the DNA database including removal on aquittal or failure to charge and limits to length of time information is held

  • Encourage use of free/open-source software in schools
  • Computing education should emphasise understanding of computers and technology, including programming for those with interest or aptitude for it
  • Safe use of the internet including privacy management should be taught

  • Abolish pharmaceutical patents
  • Increase governmental research budgets
  • Encourage the manufacture of pharmaceuticals in the UK

  • Encourage the use of free/open-source software in the NHS
  •  ??? Restrict the access of digitised personal health information

[edit] Freedom of Speech

  • A new whistle-blowing law that supersedes contract and copyright law that will defend the right of the citizen to expose corrupt or illegal activities in the workplace and elsewhere
  • A new law to protect photographers and film-makers to go about their business without persecution under anti-terrorism law
  • Libel law must not be used to smother Freedom of Speech

  • Increase governmental and parliamentary transparency and accountability
  • All information released through Freedom of Information Act should be made public by default
  • All international treaties should pass through both houses of Parliament as a standard bill
  • New Right of recall shall be introduced should confidence in an MP fall that should trigger a by-election
  • MPs should be held to a higher standard of accountability than unelected citizens
  • New right to access government funded data with an open (Creative Commons) license
  • The government's existing but widely ignored Open Source Action Plan should be put in to action

  • The UK should have a foreign policy objective to ensure the human right of freedom to communicate
  • The UK should encourage wider adoption of the encryption and anonymisation technologies

  • In all other political matters, Pirate Party Candidates are encouraged to listen to their constituents, and make their own minds up, without the intervention of party whips or political lobbyists.
