Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors.

Summary

There is a general sentiment that the excessive use of CCTV is intrusive, disproportionate with respect to our population, and inherently distressing. On the other hand, some find comfort or reassurance in the monitoring of public areas, and instead would advocate a policy of not allowing the non-selective tracking of individuals via CCTV or ensure the proper and efficient use of CCTV. Alternatively, policy should aim to reduce the need (be perceived or actual) for CCTV.

There is little evidence that CCTV actually reduces crime by any significant amount, and thus the main reason for the use of CCTV is unjustified; it creates only the illusion of security, not actual security. Furthermore, since CCTV only catches someone in the act, it could be described as treating a symptom instead of the cause of crime.

Another view is that campaigning on CCTV may encroach on the issues of copyright reform and online surveillance. Campaigning for a reduction in CCTV cameras may also be damaging to the party's image as it could create or support the perception that the party "[has] a problem with authority" or "[sides] with criminals".
