Censorship is the suppression of content for reasons including that it may be considered objectionable, harmful or sensitive.

Summary

There is broad agreement than artistic material should not be subject to governmental censorship.

It has been suggested that material on the internet that may be objectionable to many people should be subject to classification so that ISPs can warn their customers of material that they may object to and give them a choice of whether to continue. This is considered preferable to censorship. However, this is likely impractical due to the scale and dynamic nature of the internet.

The US DMCA and UK libel laws have been identified as being regularly misused by both companies and individuals to censor criticism.

There is a consensus that the demands of 'political correctness' can be excessive and patronising.
