Copyleft is the practice of using copyright law to remove restrictions on distributing copies and modified versions of a work for others and requiring that the same freedoms be preserved in modified versions.

Summary

Copyright is intended to provide incentive to create works by giving creators monopolies over their works. Copyleft uses existing copyright law to have the opposite effect, ensuring the freedom to distribute, modify and create derivatives of the works. This practice should be supported in law to allow the power of copyright to be reduced without damaging copyleft.
