A naked body scanner, also known as a full-body scanner or security scanner, is a machine designed to photograph the human body without clothes so as to identify potential security risks, such as weapons or bomb components. The two forms of scanner are known as backscatter X-ray and millimeter wave scanner. Due to the Christmas day bomb attempt (sometimes referred to as the "pants bomber"), these are currently used or are being deployed in UK airports, with the option to be frisked as an alternative.

Summary

The primary concern is that these scanners inherently work in an excessively intrusive manner, and that this is unnecessary. Other concerns include the ability for the authorities or individuals to create copies of the images and the actual effectiveness of preventing prohibited items reaching planes. While the passengers can currently choose to be frisked instead of using the scanners, there is no reason why it may not be made compulsory by the government, airports or airlines. Furthermore, digital information is practically impossible to restrict, meaning that the spread of images from the scanners is almost inevitable. It should also be noted that while previously only a few people were frisked, every passenger will be subject to the scan. Ultimately, these scanners may only further the illusion of security.

Despite this, the scanners may not be more intrusive than being frisked, and some may consider it less so: a poor image of a naked body may be less sensitive than being physically touched by another person. It may also emerge to be quicker than being frisked, and a more thorough security measure. Also, the use of scanners may simply be down to cutting costs and travelling times at airports.
