Tasks
This is merely a list of more or less self-contained tasks. Once we have a comprehensive list, we should go on to think up a coherent teams structure to acomodate all of this.
- MEMBER VOTES: A mechanism for members to overturn a decision made by an executive officer, eg. not moving the discussion forum to a 3rd-party domain.
- INTERNATIONAL: Liaising with other Pirate Parties. Monitoring activities/achievements/failures of other Pirate Parties. Reporting back succesful ideas from other Pirate Parties.
- COMMUNICATION AND PR: Planning a coherent communication strategy for the party both in terms of content and timing. This includes: collecting/organising on the wiki/pre-selecting/submitting to vote text ideas for contents of posters, leaflets or any other kind of message we give off to the public.
- OFFICERS ASSISTANTS: Being under command and available for assistance to leader and potentially other high ranking officers. Helping them manage their workload. Maybe answering emails or posting information or doing some other task under strict instructions.
- MEDIA: Organising choice of suitable spokesperson (not just one necessarily) for the party, to be able to respond to more media. Helping the leader/top officials/spokesperson choose which media requests to respond to and when.
- CAMPAIGNS: Monitoring (not running) all the campaigns done in the name of PPUK, coordinating action when necessary (a national level event, a nationwide simultaneous campaing, etc), supervise implementation of schedules (eg.: poster of the week).
- OPPONENTS WATCH: Monitoring activities of opposition in terms of: relevant aspects of their manifesto contents or orther statements, their activities (national level), and their campaign moves.
- NEWS: Supervising/Encouraging all members to submit any relevant news stories found. Streamlining the process of collecting and organising relevant news stories. Checking out for relevant news stories with comments sections that could do with our point of view exposed on them (especially if on high profile websites such as BBC, Times, etc).
- WEB-COMMUNITY: Community manager, someone to watch over the forums / set up rules etc etc for the community section of the website. Managing debate, getting people in place to summarise debates, generally helping the running of the forum / anywhere the community is (Any membership blogs)
- CROWDSOURCING: Welcoming newly registered members. Monitoring and reporting general levels of involvement. Helping new members to get involved. Helping to scale party action adequately to number of members.
- YOUNG PPUK: Welcoming supporters under voting age. Helping or teaching supporters who are just about to enter voting age to register to vote. Considering suitable activities for young supporters.
- MERCHANDISING: Managing PPUK merchandising.
- GRAPHICS AND BRAND IMAGE: Collecting/organising on the wiki/pre-selecting/submitting to vote graphics ideas (anything from poster templates -not the content, to logo designs, web advertisement banners, etc). Ensuring across the bord consistent brand image for party.
- VIDEO: Managing YouTube channel, collecting/organising on the wiki/pre-selecting/submiting to vote ideas for original videos to be produced. Producing video content.
- ARTISTS: Networking with stuggling artists (not necessarily just music), collecting contacts, potentially organising events.
- WIKI, DATA COLLECTION AND HISTORY: Managing wiki. Helping and encouraging all (members, teams, officials) to contribute with information to wiki in a streamlined useful way. Keeping track of the developments of the party and register down relevant facts (officers elected, achievements, actions) on the wiki.
Proposed Structure of Executive
This structure should accommodate in a coherent way the tasks listed above. Obviously, this structure should reflect the position of leader as top of the hierarchy. Some teams associated to particular tasks, might be subordinate to other teams managing more general tasks (eg.: Campaigns subordinate to Communication and PR). If a particular member of the executive is specifically assigned to a task's field, then their word should be considered more authoritative than, or equally authoritative to, the word of the party leader. This makes sense as presumably, having been elected to specifically deal with tasks relating to that post, they will have more specialized experience of that field.
Root-level entries in this list would constitute the NEC - entries below that level would constitute deputies to them.
- Leader – responsible for the general running of the party.
- Deputy Leader – Someone at the leader's disposal to help with the workload, for standing in when the leader is elsewhere, a sort of back-up.
- Policy Officer – Someone to be in charge of getting policy documents written, voted on and made known. Someone to coordinate (and drive) the working groups. Once policies are finalised, someone responsible for answering questions on them, making sure that the relevant other officers know what our policies are and ensuring any modifications/additions are made in a suitable way.
- Treasurer – Deal with all things financial related to the party. Making sure we remain in keeping with UK law on financial matters, and all the other responsibilities that go with being treasurer.
- Deputy Treasurers - As this is an enormous role, I'd anticipate several deputy treasurers being needed to help out.
- Campaigns Officer – Responsible for publicity of all kinds; getting the word out, that sort of thing.
- Press Officer – Someone to keep an eye on our image in the media; arranging interviews for the leader, responding to queries and articles (making sure nothing inaccurate is said about us), making sure we have press releases for big news stories (like the Digital Britain report). Maybe also compiling a nice selection of official posters/avatars/signature images/desktop wallpapers for people to use (something that has already been started on the wiki and forum). Collating links to articles about us maybe.
- Merchandise Officer – Someone in charge of any merchandise (probably communicating with the treasurer), sorting out t-shirts, mugs, cutlasses, that sort of thing.
- Data Controller – Deals with making sure the party doesn't fall foul of any parts of the Data Protection Act, as well as acting as the party's official Data Controller under that Act.
- Membership Officer – Someone to keep track of how many members we have, who they are (being able to link a real name to forum name, perhaps?), being able to answer queries on membership issues.
- Secretary – Someone to keep an eye on things and generally know what's going on – arrange internal elections, make sure everyone is talking to each other (not fighting). Someone to take 'minutes' at meetings and make sure that, if people want them, they are available (no matter how boring; not a complete transcript, just a quick summary of what was discussed so us commoners don't get the chance to feel left out).
- Nominating Officer – In charge of external elections. Responsible for coordinating things, making sure we have suitable candidates/agents etc.
- Regional Officers – Once we are large enough, people responsible for different areas (England, Scotland, Wales, etc. possibly more restricted), to keep an eye on what the different rules are in different regions and help the Nominating Officer.
- EU Election Co-ordinator – Someone to make sure we have candidates who know the rules for EU elections and (if we win any seats) coordinate MEP policy/voting.
- Local Election Co-ordinator – Same as EU Election Co-ordinator, but for local elections – possibly quite a hard job due to the various different kinds; make sure if people want to stand for their local whatever they can and have the party's support and guidance. (this may just fall under the remit of the Nominating Officer)
