Local government in England is complicated.

Some places (2-tier) have a County Council (education, social services, libraries, main roads, public transport, policing and fire services, trading standards, waste disposal and strategic planning) that is then subdivided into several district councils (responsible for local planning and building control, local roads, council housing, environmental health, markets and fairs, refuse collection and recycling, cemeteries and crematoria, leisure services, parks, and tourism). These councils are elected in separate elections.

Alternatively some areas (1-tier) have only one level of local government. These are called Unitary Authorities.

So in terms of local elections we have elections to:

  • County Council
  • District Council
  • Unitary Authority
