As soon as the snap General Election was announced, Pirates rose from our ranks, willing to take the fight for free culture, evidence based policy, copyright and patent reform, and an end to warrantless blanket mass surveillance to Westminster.

David Elston, our Acting Leader and Lead Candidate for the Local Elections, standing in St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan will be furthering the campaign upwards, contesting the Vale of Glamorgan seat in South Wales against the incumbent Conservative Secretary for Wales.

Hello fellow Pirates

Our party is about political engagement and so regardless of how you voted I want to thank all of you for taking part in our internal elections, whether you voted, verified ballots or ran the whole thing.

You really have honoured me with 70% of ballots cast voting Dave for Deputy Leader and I will continue to be a spokesperson for the party in a direction we all can be proud of.

I am however mindful that at least 30% didn’t vote for me and at worst, voted “against” me. Perhaps in a general election this is some what less important as I would already have a clear mandate and wouldn’t have to worry about anything for five years. Alternatively if we were to take a lesson from Labour, we’d be fighting a civil war and having annual leadership elections...

That’s not how the Pirate Party UK does politics.

New CIA director pledges crackdown on whistleblowers

Monday, 30 January, 2017 - 15:00

Mike Pompeo, the newly-confirmed director of the United States Central Intelligence Agency, has pledged to "aggressively seek to ensure we have the most effective programs for identifying insider threats" in a chilling statement of intent to US senators.

Pompeo's statement is a sign that the new director intends to pursue the same anti-leaks policies that discourage whistleblowing as were enforced by the previous administration under President Obama.

Ethical Banking

Monday, 23 January, 2017 - 22:45

HSBC whistleblower 'Mr Ethical' has won his hard, drawn-out, 13-year-long battle against his former employer.

Four million pounds in compensation is due to be split between 6,700 people who had been forced to pay unreasonable debt collection charges.

David A Elston, Pirate Party Spokesperson, said:

“It’s not every day that someone takes on a big bank and wins. Just over a year ago, Nicholas Wilson (or as he has come to be known, 'Mr Ethical') told me, and the hosts of Anon UK Radio, about the gruelling experience he had been through.
