It might be the height of summer, but there still seems to have been a fair amount happening in the Pirate Party - so do please read on to find out more.
Firstly, of course, we have the results of the internal NEC and Board of Governors Elections. Congratulations to all those successful and thanks for being willing to contribute in an official capacity! You can read the full details of the results here: https://www.pirateparty.org.uk/internal-election-results, and more about new Party Leader Cris Chesha here: https://www.pirateparty.org.uk/cris-chesha
Also note that we still have a vacancy for the role of Party Secretary - do get in touch with any member of the NEC if you are interested in finding out more about this role and what it entails.
Birthday Crowdfunder - #WeArrSix
The most important Campaign that we are running during the Month of August is our Birthday Crowdfunder. As you will hopefully have seen, Pirate Party UK was 6 on the 30th July, and so we are in the middle of running a month long retrospective alongside a crowdfunding effort. Please get involved by writing a blogpost on the main site, spreading the message on social media (with the #WeArrSix tag) - linking to the crowdfunder, or perhaps even more importantly, by donating any spare bullion that you have... http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/wearrsix
IPO Copyright Response
One of the core, almost totemic, policies of the Pirate Party is on copyright. The UK's Intellectual Property Office has come out with a consulation on increasing the potential jail term for copyright infringements to 10 Years. You can see our press release here: https://pirateparty.org.uk/press/pirate-party-and-others-respond-copyright-consultation
Our response to the consultation itself is here: https://pirateparty.org.uk/response-changes-penalties-online-copyright-infringement-consultation
Again, we campaigned on this on social media, along side the Open Rights Group and others using the tag #TenYearsintheBrig. Do have a look to see what we and others were saying about this, and please add your response to the consultation as well.
The new Leadership team lost no time in getting themselves in the news, with Cris having interviews and comments on both Digitising Democracy (https://medium.com/organizer-sandbox/the-democracy-interface-time-to-upgrade-f8998b0024ea) and on Net Neutrality (http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/eu-law-that-could-make-uk-porn-filters-illegal-heading-vote-1510673). Also, Mark Chapman of the London branch was quoted on Legal Highs in Lambeth (http://www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2015/07/31/the-madness-begins-lambeth-bans-everything-in-legal-high-cra).
Meanwhile, various people wrote blogposts, including George Walkden looking at Pirates and Piketty (https://pirateparty.org.uk/blogs/george-walkden), David Elston on Rent Caps/Controls (https://www.pirateparty.org.uk/blogs/david-elston/labour-and-greens-both-wrong-rent), and a #longread from Danfox Davies on Gene Patents and GMO's (https://pirateparty.org.uk/party-magazine/genetic-grinch-scenario). Naturally if you have something to say or blog about, then just get stuck in - login to the site and click on the 'Something on your mind' Button.
The new NEC are in the process of getting their feet under the table and working out what needs to be done (those quiet behind-the-scenes things that have to happen) as well as those things that they think that we should be focusing on as a party over the next few months and years. In due course we will undoubtedly be looking for volunteers and wanting people to get involved more, both nationally and in their local area.
