Overcrowding in the classroom

Thursday, 28 June, 2012 - 10:00

Loz Kaye commented on reports in the Manchester Evening News that children in Manchester are being taught in overcrowded classrooms:

"With my background in education I know that class sizes are crucial. It’s the difference between being able to help every student with their different backgrounds, and seeing them as a mere mass to churn through the next test."

Pirate Party UK - Best ever result in a UK election

Maria Aretoulaki recieved more than double the votes of her UKIP rival

The Pirate Party UK stood three candidates in Manchester on Thursday, Tim Dobson in Ancoats and Clayton, Maria Aretoulaki in City Centre and Loz Kaye in Bradford ward. Our candidates and activists have been working hard to make contact with those in their wards with a positive result for the Pirate Party and for the people in the wards where they stood.

Everything starts somewhere

After a lot of hard work on all sides, we've just fought our first election as the UK pirate party.

Across 9 seats, by my calculations we polled 0.34%, for a total of 1340 votes. Our best result was in Manchester Gorton, where our candidate Tim Dobson polled 236 votes for 0.62% of the vote.

Before this election, we didn't know what level of support we could expect. Nor did we know how to organise ourselves, or how to navigate the election requirements and comply with the law. So this has been a tremendous learning experience for everyone involved, and where we've had false starts and had to begin again, and then found a fresh way forward.
