Falkvinge's open letter to the music industry

Rick Falkvinge, leader of the Swedish Pirate Party, is attending a conference in Manchester today. For the event, he's written an open letter to the music industry. It is reproduced below:

Dear music industry,

Thank you for inviting me to be the opening speaker at your conference In The City in Manchester, UK. I am inspired by your courage to bring what must be seen as a threat into the midst of your ranks.

Music industry steals musician's copyright

The music industry is always complaining about "copyright theft". Except when they do it, of course...

Which brings me to the case of Edwyn Collins, the Scottish musician whose most famous hit is probably A Girl Like You. He has been barred from uploading his own music to MySpace, because the music industry erroneously say they own the copyright:

Edwyn Collins has been barred from streaming his own song through MySpace. Management for the former Orange Juice frontman have been unable to convince the website that they own the rights to A Girl Like You, despite the fact that they, er, do.

Musicians oppose disconnecting filesharers

The BBC is reporting that many musicians oppose the government's plans to disconnect filesharers:

An alliance of music stars, songwriters and record producers has spoken out against UK government proposals to kick file-sharers off the internet.

Persistent file-sharers could have their internet accounts suspended in an attempt to crack down on piracy. But Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien, a member of the Featured Artists' Coalition (FAC), said: "It's going to start a war which they'll never win."

Spotify: good for labels, bad for musicians

Editor's picture

Over at the Guardian, Helienne Lindvall writes that if Spotify is successful, the music industry stands to make lots of money, but musicians won't get much of it:

No wonder the majors speak so highly of Spotify – they receive 18% of shares in the online streaming service. It's just a pity that artists won't get to see any of this.
